In a stern move to curb underage driving, the Hyderabad City Traffic Police has launched a Special Drive against minor driving from April 5 to April 22, during which 1,275 cases were booked and registrations of 35 vehicles were cancelled for a period of one year.
As part of the crackdown, Hyderabad City Traffic Police submitted requisitions to the Regional Transport Authority (RTA) for vehicle registration cancellations. So far, 35 vehicle registrations have been cancelled, with more under review.
The police also highlighted a harsh but clear consequence for the underage offenders – those caught driving will not be eligible to apply for a driving licence until the age of 25.
Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic), D Joel Davis has appealed to parents and guardians not to allow minors to drive. “It is not only illegal but also endangers the life of the child and others on the road,” he said, urging the public to support the initiative and comply with traffic rules.
