In a landmark initiative, 140 people’s representatives, including Ministers, MLAs, MLCs, and corporation chairpersons, along with 450 senior IAS, IPS, and IFS officers, simultaneously launched the Common Diet Plan in welfare hostels across Telangana on December 14. The programme, aimed at providing uniform, nutritious meals to students in Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Backward Classes, and Minority Welfare Hostels, was celebrated as a significant step toward improving the health and education standards for underprivileged students in the state.
Chief Minister Revanth Reddy inaugurated the programme at the TG Social Welfare Residential School in Chilkoor, Rangareddy district, while Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka launched it at the Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Gurukula School in Bonakal, Madhira constituency.
Addressing the gathering, Revanth Reddy announced that from now on, diet charge bills would be processed through a green channel by the 10th of every month to ensure timely payments. He also emphasized the government’s historic decision to increase diet charges by 40% and cosmetic charges by 200% to provide high-quality meals and hygiene products for students.
The initiative was launched at several key locations across the state. Speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar inaugurated the plan at a Minority Welfare Hostel in Vikarabad, while Revenue and Housing Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy presided over the programme at Telangana Tribal Welfare School and College in Tirumalayapalem. BC Welfare Minister Ponnam Prabhakar led the event at the Social Welfare Center of Excellence Boys’ College in Sheikhpet, Hyderabad.
In Nirmal, Women and Child Welfare Minister Danasari Anasuya Seethakka launched the plan at the Telangana Tribal Welfare Boys’ Residential School in Khanapur. Nagarkurnool’s Social Welfare Girls’ Residential School in Kollapur hosted Minister Jupally Krishna Rao for the launch. In Ganapuram, Ministers Damodar Rajanarasimha and Duddilla Sridhar Babu started the new diet plan at the Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Residential School.
Minister Konda Surekha inaugurated the programme at Dr BR Ambedkar Century Junior College for Boys in Hatnur, Sangareddy district. Civil Supplies Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy launched the Common Diet Plan at Mahendra Hills Girls’ Welfare Hostel in Hyderabad.
The state government has prioritised improving the welfare hostel system with this initiative, ensuring all students receive standardized, nutritious food regardless of location. The programme is part of a larger effort to modernize facilities in these hostels, including better infrastructure, clean water, and gardens to create a conducive learning environment.
Chief Minister Revanth Reddy emphasised the government’s commitment to students’ health and academic success. “This initiative ensures that every student has equal access to nutrition and support, fostering their growth and future achievements,” he said. Parents and students welcomed the programme, acknowledging it as a milestone in the state’s welfare and education system.
