Vijayawada: Due to the impact of Cyclone Michaung, NTR district has received heavy rain causing a significant amount of water to accumulate at the Prakasam Barrage. To prevent any damage, the Water Resources Department opened 25 gates, each one foot in height, and discharged 18,500 cusecs of water downstream on Wednesday. The district has recorded about 21.90 cm of rainfall for the past two days.According to Water Resources Department officials, the upstream of the Prakasam Barrage experienced continuous rainfall for two days. This resulted in a large volume of water reaching the barrage from Keesara and many other streams in the district. As a result, the downstream canals and streams were filled with rainwater, prompting the Irrigation authorities to stop the release of water to the canals. To manage the situation, the Irrigation Department lifted 25 gates, each one foot in height, and released the surplus water at a rate of around 18,500 cusecs into the sea. Additionally, the department maintained the barrage crust level at 12 feet and discharged the surplus downstream.
