5 killed, 2 hurt as lorry hits auto

In a ghastly road accident, five people were killed and two others were injured when a speeding lorry collided with an auto-rickshaw on the Kurnool-Guntur state highway, near Santhamaguluru village in the Bapatla district on Sunday.

Upon receiving reports of the accident, police swiftly arrived at the scene and transported the injured victims to a nearby hospital. Three of the victims succumbed to their injuries at the accident site, while two others lost their lives during treatment at Narasaraopet Government Hospital.

The five deceased individuals have been identified as residents of Guntur: Chelimella Kavitha (19), Alavala Mangathayar (19), Palthi Nari (19), Thammishetti Tulsi (16), and Burri Madhavi (35).

The two injured survivors, Salikunedi Winner and Paltya Raju Naik, were immediately shifted to Narasaraopet Government Area Hospital for medical attention.

District SP Vakul Jindal, upon receiving the news, rushed to the scene to assess the circumstances surrounding the tragic accident. Eyewitnesses and police officials were interviewed to determine the factors contributing to the collision.

The lorry involved, bearing licence plate AP 07 TN 4248, was thoroughly inspected.

The lorry had been en route from Anaparthi in East Godavari district to Markapuram, carrying a cargo of ‘idli ravva.’ It collided with the auto-rickshaw, bearing licence plate AP 07 TG 1630, which was transporting seven passengers back to Guntur following an event in Markapuram. Tragically, two women and one man lost their lives at the accident site, while two additional women succumbed to their injuries during treatment at Narasaraopet Government Area Hospital. One woman and one man continue to receive medical care at the hospital.

The SP confirmed that the accident resulted in five fatalities, with two individuals currently receiving medical treatment. A case has been registered under Cr.No.147/2023, Sections 304(A) and 337 of the Indian Penal Code, and an investigation is underway. Efforts are going on to apprehend the lorry’s driver and cleaner, who are currently at large.
