During the debate on the Telangana Transplantation of Human Organs Bill, BRS Working President KT Rama Rao pledged to donate his organs, becoming the first legislator to do so publicly on the floor of the Telangana Assembly.
Describing it as a deeply personal, humanitarian decision, KT Rama Rao said public representatives must lead by example when it comes to promoting awareness about organ donation. “We, as public representatives, must lead by example. It is our duty to raise awareness and inspire the people in our constituencies to embrace this noble cause,” he told the House.
Calling on the Speaker to facilitate collective participation, KT Rama Rao suggested that a signature drive should be launched in the Assembly complex to encourage MLAs to register as organ donors. “If Members are willing, let us launch a signature drive right here in the Assembly,” he said, offering to be the first one to sign.
He also stressed the urgent need to normalise conversations around organ donation.
“Organ donation is a humanitarian act that can save countless lives,” he said, adding that the time had come to remove the stigma and hesitation surrounding this life-saving decision.
KTR’s statement drew appreciation from across party lines, with several legislators standing up to applaud his gesture. Members termed KT Rama Rao’s move both inspirational and timely, especially as the House was in the middle of discussing a Bill aimed at strengthening the legal framework around organ transplants in the state.
Many MLAs expressed interest in joining the drive and echoed his sentiment that lawmakers must set a social standard for citizens.
