TG demands inclusion of Gor Boli in Eighth Schedule

Must read

The Telangana Legislative Assembly passed a resolution urging the Centre to include ‘Gor Boli’ – the language of the Lambada and Banjara communities – in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution.
The resolution, moved by the Minister for Tourism, Culture, Archaeology and Excise, Jupalli Krishna Rao, highlights the need to preserve the unique linguistic and cultural identity of the Lambadas.
The resolution said there are over 20 lakh Lambadas in Telangana alone, with a large section of the Banjara community living in states like Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal also speaking Gor Boli.
The government acknowledged the Lambadas for preserving their traditions and continuing to use Gor Boli despite modern influences. “The Lambadas have a unique identity, language, culture and traditions among the tribal population. They are practicing them even today,” the resolution stated.
Emphasising the need to document the language’s rich oral tradition, the resolution called for extensive research and publication of Gor Boli literature to preserve it for future generations. “It is our shared responsibility to protect the ‘Gor Boli’ language from extinction,” Jupalli said.
By seeking constitutional recognition, the state aims to secure official status and institutional support for Gor Boli, ensuring its survival. The resolution represents a significant step in attempts by the Telangana Government to preserve the culture of tribal people.
