Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Andhra Pradesh on Friday to lay the foundation and inaugurate a range of projects worth Rs 58,000 crore in the State’s greenfield capital, Amaravati.

In what is described as one of the largest single-day infrastructure announcements for the State, the Prime Minister will inaugurate and lay the foundation for 94 projects worth Rs 57,962 crore, according to a press release from the Chief Minister’s office.

As part of the Amaravati greenfield capital reconstruction, Modi will lay the foundation for 74 projects valued at Rs 49,000 crore. These projects include the construction of key buildings such as the assembly, secretariat, high court, and judicial residential quarters.

The Prime Minister will also launch nine central projects worth Rs 5,028 crore, including the DRDO missile testing centre (Rs 1,459 crore) in Nagayalanka, Krishna district, a unity mall in Vizag (Rs 100 crore), a Guntakal-Mallappa Gate rail overbridge (Rs 293 crore), and six national highway projects (Rs 3,680 crore). The missile testing centre will feature a launch centre, technical instrumentation, indigenous radars, telemetry, and electro-optical systems, all aimed at enhancing India’s defence capabilities.

This marks the second relaunch of the Amaravati construction project in a decade, with Modi having first laid the foundation in October 2015. Under the previous TDP regime (2014–2019), some temporary structures, including the secretariat and high court building, were erected, but the YSRCP-led government scrapped the ‘dream project’ initiated by the TDP, which had pooled 54,000 acres from 29,881 farmers and others.

A total of 8,603 sq km was notified as the capital region, with 217 sq km allocated for the city and 16.9 sq km designated as the core capital area.

After taking office nearly a year ago, Chief Minister Naidu has revived the greenfield capital project. Full-scale construction is expected to resume by December, following Modi’s relaunch on Friday.

In a recent presentation to a Singapore government delegation, Chief Secretary K. Vijayanand highlighted that the relaunch will see the resumption of works worth about Rs 1 lakh crore.

Naidu is also looking to acquire another 40,000 acres for a ‘megacity’ that will include an international airport. On April 15, Municipal Minister P. Narayana revealed that Naidu plans to merge adjacent areas like Mangalagiri, Tadepalli, Guntur, and Vijayawada with Amaravati.

Describing Amaravati as the ‘capital of goddesses’, Naidu has ambitious plans for the futuristic city. These include nine thematic cities, such as a government city, a knowledge city, a health city, a sports city, an electronics city, a media city, a finance city, a justice city, and a tourism city.

The city will also host prestigious educational institutions like XLRI, BITS Pilani, reputed schools, and the Ratan Tata Innovation Hub.

State-of-the-art infrastructure, such as highways, expressways, and rail links, will connect Amaravati to major ports, including Krishnapatnam, Kakinada, and Visakhapatnam, bolstering exports and agricultural market integration.

Aiming to position Amaravati as a hub for knowledge, AI, logistics, and green energy, Naidu envisions the city as a centre for sustainability, with solar-powered housing and other green features.

Naidu recently informed the Finance Commission that Amaravati requires Rs 77,249 crore for construction. To date, Rs 31,000 crore has been secured from the World Bank, HUDCO, and KfW, with an additional Rs 47,000 crore still needed.

“The development of Amaravati is a national priority. The Centre will provide all necessary financial and institutional support to make Amaravati a global city. It will bring in world-class institutions, digital infrastructure, urban transport systems, and green energy solutions,” said a statement from the Chief Minister’s office.

The region is set to be developed as a model capital in line with India’s Viksit Bharat 2047 (Developed India) vision.
