Metro hikes fares

L&T Metro Rail (Hyderabad) Limited (L&TMRHL) has hiked Hyderabad Metro fares and it will come into effect from May 17.

This revision follows recommendations by the Fare Fixation Committee (FFC) constituted under Section 34 of the Metro Railways (Operation & Maintenance) Act, 2002, as per the Central India directions issued on September 5, 2022.

The price of the minimum ticket will increase by Rs 2, going up from Rs 10 to Rs 12. The maximum ticket price will increase by Rs 15, from Rs 60 to Rs 75. This is first time ticket rates have been hiked after the launch of the Metro 7.5 years ago.

The committee, chaired by a former High Court judge, submitted its report on January 25, 2023, proposing a new fare structure aimed at balancing affordability for passengers with financial sustainability for Metro operations. As per Section 37 of the Act, the recommendations of the committee are binding on the Metro administration.

As per the revised fare structure, the minimum fare for a journey up to 2 km will be Rs 12, while the maximum fare, for distances beyond 24 km will be Rs 75. The key slabs are Rs 18 for up to 4 km, Rs 40 for up to 9 km, Rs 55 for up to 15 km, and Rs 66 for up to 21 km. These revised rates will be applicable on all Metro corridors from Friday.

The announcement comes as part of L&TMRHL’s efforts to ensure high-quality services without compromising operational viability. “We sincerely thank our passengers for their support. The revised fares are essential to sustain and enhance service quality,” the company said in a statement.
