The Congress Government in Telangana is trying to implement 42 per cent BC reservations in the forthcoming local body elections, TPCC Chief B. Mahesh Kumar Goud said.

He gave a PowerPoint presentation on the caste census held in Telangana on Friday at the AICC office in Indira Bhavan in New Delhi which was attended by Rahul Gandhi, Jairam Ramesh, Koppula Raju, Madhu Yashki and others. AICC officials and the party’s media in-charges also participated. The PowerPoint Presentation lasted two and a half hours.

Mahesh said that Telangana showed direction to the country through the caste census.

“The Congress came to power in Telangana promising a BC caste census. After Rahul promised a caste census during the Bharat Jodo Yatra, the BCs turned towards the Congress. When the Congress came to power, we took all necessary steps on the caste census. Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka, and the Cabinet took special care regarding the caste census and acted quickly. The caste census was done scientifically. A cabinet subcommittee was also set up with Minister Uttam as its chairman,” Mahesh said.

“We approved it in the Cabinet, drafted a Bill in the Assembly and had a comprehensive discussion. Due to the caste census, caste-wise calculations were made in the state. With that, the calculation of how much reservation should be given to which caste was made. A caste census was done for the first time in the country in Telangana, and that was done during Congress rule. We took the caste census in Telangana in line with Rahul’s ideas.

This became a ‘model’ for the country. A resolution was passed in the Assembly to give 42 per cent BC reservations in the state and sent it to Parliament. We are trying to implement the 42 per cent BC reservation in the next elections. This is a historic decision. We are proud that Telangana is the first state to do so,” Mahesh said.
