Andhra Pradesh is rapidly advancing its clean energy transition, with the State government aiming to install 2 million rooftop solar units by the end of 2025 under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana. This was emphasised during a detailed review meeting chaired by Chief Secretary and Special Chief Secretary (Energy) K Vijayanand at the CS Camp Office in Vijayawada on Thursday.
The Special Chief Secretary instructed DISCOMs and NREDCAP to collectively install 300,000 rooftop solar units by June 2025, assigning each DISCOM and NREDCAP 75,000 installations.
Highlighting the leadership of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and Energy Minister Gottipati Ravi Kumar, Vijayanand stressed the importance of aggressive outreach and awareness campaigns, especially targeting SC, ST and Backward Class households. Under the scheme, SC/ST households will receive 2-kilowatt rooftop solar systems completely free of cost. For BC households, a subsidy of Rs80,000 – Rs60,000 from the Centre and Rs20,000 from the State – will be provided towards the Rs1.20 lakh installation cost.
A key directive from the review was to develop one model solar village in each district, totalling 26, to showcase effective implementation. Vijayanand also called for coordination with banks to secure financial tie-ups in these villages.
To date, the state has registered 1.212 million applications under the scheme, with APSPDCL recording 592,000, APCPDCL 534,000, and APEPDCL 85,711 applications. Approximately 587,000 SC/ST households have been identified for rooftop solar installations, with a projected capacity of 1,174 MWp and an estimated annual generation of 1,743 million units.
Vijayanand reiterated the government’s commitment to providing clean energy access for all eligible households and directed DISCOMs to ensure timely and efficient implementation of the scheme.
The meeting was attended by CMDs of APEPDCL, APCPDCL and APSPDCL – I Prudhvi Tej, K Santosha Rao, and P Pulla Reddy – among others.
