Actor Siddharth is a popular figure in Telugu cinema too, having acted in many Telugu films earlier. His Tamil films are often dubbed into Telugu and now another one titled 3BHK has also been dubbed here with the same name. Senior actors Sarath Kumar and Devayani play Siddharth’s parents in this one. Before its release, the makers said the story revolves around the father-son relationship and their bond. Meetha Raghunath and Chaithra J are the other two actresses who played important roles in this film. Sri Ganesh is the director and here is the story.

Story
Vasudev (Sarath Kumar) works as an accountant in a private company and lives in a rented house with his wife Shanthi (Devayani) and their two children, Prabhu (Siddharth) and Aarthy (Meetha Raghunath). They are a middle-class family and Vasudev’s dream is to buy a house and live in his own home. He tries several times but fails for various reasons. He then puts the responsibility on his son to fulfill his wish of owning a home.
Prabhu wants to study Mechanical Engineering but ends up studying IT because his father forces him to. Prabhu struggles in his career and also fails multiple times to buy a house. Did he eventually succeed in fulfilling his father’s dream of a home? What happened to Aarthy after she married a rich boy? How did Prabhu overcome his struggles and what happened in the end? This forms the crux of the story.

Analysis
Director Sri Ganesh adapted the novel 3BHK Veedu, written by Aravindh Sachidanandam, for this film 3BHK. It is a critically acclaimed book in Tamil. But the story itself is not new, as Siddharth has already explored similar themes in Bommarillu, which also focuses on the father-son bond and relationship. This film’s story is almost identical to Bommarillu and you could even say that 3BHK feels like a sequel to it.
The story is not bad, as it portrays the middle-class mentality and their dream of owning a house. But the problem with this film is that the director has narrated it like a film from the 70s. The pacing is extremely slow and at some point, you feel like you are watching a TV serial. When telling a story about a middle-class family, you need to include strong emotional scenes, but in this film, they are missing.
Not only the story but all the characters also move very slowly. For example, Sarath Kumar takes his own time just to get out of his car and enter a house. There are many such scenes that are dead slow and you need a lot of patience to watch this kind of film. There are a few scenes where the director shows the problems faced by a middle-class family when they move into a rented house. The first half mostly focuses on Prabhu, played by Siddharth and his school and college life, where the director takes too much time to narrate. These scenes are stretched excessively and you feel bored at one point because the story doesn’t move forward even an inch. In between, the father tries to buy a new house, but problems arise in a way that feels like a TV serial.
The second half again focuses on Siddharth’s struggles to find a job while trying to buy a new house and failing. The sister’s episode is shown in the second half. Maybe the makers planned this film for an OTT release because of the way the film is narrated and the slow progression of the story.

Performances
When it comes to the artists, Siddharth has already proved himself as a talented actor and he once again steals the show with his performance. His transformation from a schoolboy to a 40-year-old man is incredible and he truly inhabits the character. Sarath Kumar is a senior actor and his presence gives some weight to the film. You can see Vasudevan in his performance, which is definitely one of the highlights. Meetha Raghunath plays Siddharth’s sister and it’s a memorable role for her. She gives a stunning performance. Chithra plays the female lead, but her character is very minimal. Yogi Babu appears in a cameo and many others also offer support.

Technical Aspects
Technically, the film is okay and the music is also average. The cinematography is just average and the dialogues are well-written.

Verdict
Finally, 3BHK is a completely predictable story and director Sri Ganesh narrates it too slowly. You need a lot of patience to watch this film, as it often feels like a TV serial. Siddharth’s transformation is one of the highlights along with Sarath Kumar’s performance, but still, you can wait to watch it when it comes to an OTT platform.
