Producer Murali Mohan, who has made several films under the Jayabheri Arts banner, recalled the making of Athadu, which starred Mahesh Babu and Trisha and was directed by Trivikram Srinivas. “We initially wanted to produce Trivikram’s debut with Athadu, but he was committed to Sravanthi Movies at the time. He came back to us for Athadulater,” Murali Mohan recalled.
He added that the film was released on August 10, 2005, and now, after ten years, it is being re-released on August 9 to mark Mahesh Babu’s birthday.
Murali Mohan admitted he was initially doubtful when Trivikram narrated the story, as the protagonist had grey shades. “But Trivikram convinced us that it would connect with contemporary audiences. We gave him full creative freedom, and Mahesh Babu supported us by giving call sheets as required,” he said.
He shared that the climax was shot over 28 days on a specially erected set, using cameras imported from the UK. “While the theatrical performance was moderate, the film gained cult status through television premieres, bringing immense reputation and recovery through satellite and other channels. Athadu brought goodwill to Jayabheri Arts,” said Murali Mohan.

When asked about a sequel, he confirmed, “If it’s ever made, it will only be with Trivikram and Mahesh Babu.” He also revealed that unlike many Jayabheri films, he did not act in Athadu because Trivikram didn’t offer him a role. “Yes, I didn’t act because there was no role offered,” he said.
He also shared that Sobhan Babu was initially approached to play the role eventually essayed by Nasser. “Sobhan Babu personally called me to decline the offer. He said he wanted to be remembered as a hero, not as a father figure,” said Murali Mohan.
Jayabheri Arts’ Priyanka said, “We’ve worked on upgrading the film with superior sound and visuals. The first 15 minutes and the climax scenes will be a treat to experience in theatres. We hope audiences relive the film with the same excitement.”
