Telangana Legislative Assembly Deputy Speaker Padma Rao on Friday directed the HMWSSB officials to remove the old sewage pipeline and install a new one in its place at Chintal Bavi. Until then supply drinking water to the residents through tankers, he said.
After reports of contaminated water supplied at Chintal Bhavi in Secunderabad emerged, Padma Rao, along with HMWSSB Operations Director Ajmira Krishna, visited the area on Friday.
During their visit, the officials informed that on April 25, local linemen noticed that 15 to 20 households in the area were supplied with contaminated water for the initial 5-10 minutes after the water was released. After noticing the water, the officials immediately stopped the supply and advised the residents not to use it for drinking purposes. A tanker was sent for temporary usage of drinking water.
When the pipeline was checked with a pollution testing machine, it was found that sewage water had entered the fresh water pipeline through a manhole.
Later on April 27, the households again received contaminated water for a few minutes. Accordingly, the officials concerned visited the site and conducted chlorine tests in which chlorine percentage was found to be 0.2 ppm. After that, the officials contacted the doctors at the nearby Basti Dawakhana and got the health checkup of the residents. Some of them were suffering from diarrhoea but there was no need to worry about their health, the doctors informed the officials.
