The city of Hyderabad is preparing to welcome second drag racing event very soon after hosting the global Formula E Race.
“Hyderabad had its first-ever drag racing Speed Fest night racing, the World’s Fastest Sport and T20 of motorsports; testing the fastest quarter-mile timings at Narsingi, Telangana State Police Academy road, recently. Will have more of it soon. We, from Hyderabad Development Metropolitan Automotive had provided the service road for the purpose,” said Arvind Kumar, Special Chief Secretary, Municipal Administration and Urban Development, Telangana.
Sandeep Sinha, organiser and founder of Showboat Car Racing, said the purpose of drag race is officially permitted by Motorsport Federation of India and motorsport as a sport. It is also recognised by the Sports Authority of India. Drag race as an event happens globally. Hyderabad being a global city, it’s only apt to conduct a globally recognised event here, he added.
“We wish to see a lot of motorsport enthusiasts but what I really want to see is more frontline Indian drivers and riders competing at such global events. As of now, it’s a yearly event, but we are exploring to conduct it at least twice a year,” he added.
On the police support, he said, “Cyberabad police was just phenomenal. Their on-ground support was key to delivering a flawless event.”
On how participants knew about the first event and will know about upcoming one, the organiser said, “We want to see more audience. Unfortunately, due to budgetary constrains we couldn’t advertise much. Tickets for the last drag race event was available on ‘book my show’ but we couldn’t create much awareness and could sell just a few tickets.
On the locations, the officials said any location that doesn’t cause inconvenience to general public and has a straight road of 1.3 km can be explored for the event. “The location we chose for the last event was perfect and the road was super safe for all the drivers and riders for the drag race. It says a lot about the superior infrastructure of Hyderabad.”
