When Narendra Modi agreed to lead the summit in Indonesia recently, global leaders gave him a standing ovation. Heads of nations opined that Modi would be able to come up with solutions to many of the problems that the world is facing today. White House official John Finer recently went on record that there has been a qualitative change in the Indo-US relations.

There is no doubt that India, which is taking over the G-20 presidency, will influence internation- al relations to a great extent. Traditionally a non-aligned country, India has begun to play a significant role in the international arena ever since Narendra Modi became the Prime Minister in 2014.

India, by virtues of its GDP, is today the fifth largest economy in the world. In terms of purchasing power, the country is the third largest economy. It is also deemed to be the second largest military power.

The country, under the leadership of Modi, is developing at a faster clip to become a developed nation. The country had played an important role in creating the G-20, Quad and other international groups. Its influence on East Asia Summit, WTO, IME, G-8, G-5, IBSA, Shanghai Cooperation is notable. The country is a member of BRICS–comprising Brazil, Russia, China and South Africa, Quad — comprising the USA, Japan and Australia, and the Shanghai Corporation–comprising Russia, China and Central Asia. India is invited to G-7 meetings whenever they are held.

After taking over as Prime Minister, Modi has visited 67 countries, leaving the country’s imprint at the international level. He proved the greatness of the nation by supplying Covid vaccines to many countries during the pandemic situation.

The US placed on record how Modi had played a crucial role at theG-20 summit in Indonesia for achieving unanimity on a widerange of issues, including the Russian attack on Ukraine as well as nuclear power and issued a joint statement.

At the summit, Modi observed the “Lotus will bloom” even in the most adverse situation. Noticeably, the Lotus is not only the poll symbol of the Bharatiya Janata Party, but also the logo of the G-20 Summit. While unveiling the logo, Modi observed: “We all belong to one earth, one family, and have only one future”.

Various countries had mounted pressure on Russian leader Putin to end Russia’s occupation of Ukraine, but Putin did not yield. Modi too spoke to Putin many times and prevailed upon him saying that in the present conditions establishing peace was paramount. Putin did not take these words personally and so Russia’s ties with India
over the supply of weapons and fuel were not affected.

India, as a leader of the G-20 nations, is going to play a crucial role in not only making Russia withdraw from Ukraine but also in effectively implementing climate action plan, among other things. India is going to help the G-20 nations face the economic slowdown. G-20 nations contribute to 85 percent of the global GDP. They account for 75 percent of global trade. Moreover, two- thirds of the global population lives in these countries.

After assuming presidency of the G-20 on December 1, India will hold 200 crucial meetings at 32 places in the country with the participation of Presidents, Prime Ministers, Finance Ministers, and governors of central banksol various nations.

The World Trade Organization, at its last meeting, expressed its wish that India should become the voice of the developing nations. Globally nations are facing somewhat similar problems. The key lies in solving problems collectively and improving financial and diplomatic ties with various. All told, it is obvious that Modi can achieve success not only at home but also abroad.
