BJP Lok Sabha Member Soyam Bapu Rao made a startling revelation on Monday that he had spent a part of the funds allotted under the Members of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS) on personal things.
He also brashly declared that he did nothing wrong by spending MPLADS funds on personal things.
Speaking at a BJP people’s representatives’ meeting here, Bapu Rao said that he had received Rs 2.5 crore as the second instalment of MPLADS funds. “I gave the funds to some Mandal Parishad Territorial Constituency (MPTC) members. I spent a part of it constructing my house as it will not look good if an MP does not have a house in his home constituency,” he said.
He also told his party’s elected representatives that he had spent a part of MPLADS funds for conducting his son’s wedding.
Even though Bapu Rao’s revelations have sparked a debate among political observers, he insisted that he did nothing wrong by spending a part of MPLADS funds on personal things.
He also went to the extent of saying, “In the past, some MPs had misappropriated the entire MPLADS funds allotted to them. I spent only a part of it on personal things. You (BJP people’s representatives) must realise that.”
“No MP in the country was allotted Rs 5 crore. BJP MPs Bandi Sanjay Kumar and Dharmapuri Arvind were allotted that. My PA called me Sunday and told me that the money has been credited into my account. I decided to distribute the funds to MPTC members and councillors. This time too I can spend the money on matters personal. But I decided not to do it as you may not consider me a human if I do that,” he concluded.
Soyam Bapu Rao says BJP leaders Rathod Ramesh and Payala Shankar are spreading bad propaganda against me because they cannot bear my growth.
