The State-level Steering Committee on energy transition in the state met under the chairmanship of Chief Secretary Santhi Kumari on Saturday.

The main objective of the committee is to develop and implement a carbon emission intensity reduction roadmap in the state and to shift from conventional to non-conventional energy.

The Chief Secretary said that the cumulative capacity of renewable energy in the state is 6,335 MW. Telangana is one of the leading states in the country to adopt renewables in its energy mix. Renewable energy adoption has increased from 9.8% in FY 23 to 14.1% (in energy terms) in FY 24.

The share of renewable energy in installed capacity is around 25 per cent. She noted that Telangana is one of the leading states in adopting energy conservation measures and it aims to promote energy-efficient appliances and conservation measures.

The Chief Secretary directed the MD of TSREDCO to formulate a specific proposal identifying village and mandal-wise locations of lands that can be given to TSREDCO for the installation of EV charging stations.

Special Chief Secretary (Energy) Sunil Sharma said that the Telangana State Solar Policy–2015 has promotional benefits and incentives to encourage solar power. He said that instructions should be issued to all government departments to install solar rooftop systems through TSREDCO. Similarly, instructions should be issued mandating the installation of solar rooftop systems for all residential and commercial buildings and linking them to building permission in all municipalities and ULBs.

The meeting also discussed the formation of a State-Level Committee on Sustainable Alternatives Towards Affordable Transportation (SATAT) for the promotion of Compressed Bio Gas (CBG) projects as per Central guidelines.

The committee felt the need for framing a policy for the promotion of waste-to-energy projects in the state for effective management of municipal solid waste.
