Telangana is sixth among states which have the highest percentage of MLAs facing criminal cases. Around 61% of TS MLAs have declared criminal cases and 39% have serious criminal cases against them.
As per a report of the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR), states with the highest percentage of MLAs with criminal cases are Kerala, where 95 (68%) of the 140 MLAs, Bihar, where 161 (67%) of the 242 MLAs, Delhi, where 44 (63%) of the 70 MLAs, Maharashtra, where 175 (62%) out of the 284 MLAs, Telangana, where 72 (61%) out of the 118 MLAs and Tamil Nadu, where 134 (60%) out of the 224 MLAs have declared criminal cases against themselves in their self-sworn affidavits.
The report says that 37 (53%) out of the 70 MLAs from Delhi, 122 (50%) out of the 242 MLAs from Bihar, 114 (40%) out of the 284 MLAs from Maharashtra, 31 (39%) out of the 79 MLAs from Jharkhand, 46 (39%) out of the 118 MLAs from Telangana and 155 (38%) out of the 403 MLAs from Uttar Pradesh have declared serious criminal cases against themselves in their self-sworn affidavits.The ADR and the National Election Watch (NEW) have analysed the self-sworn affidavits of MLAs from State Assemblies and Union Territories across the nation. This data has been extracted from affidavits filed by the MLAs before contesting their last elections. The affidavits of 4,001 MLAs out of the 4,033 MLAs of 28 State Assemblies and two Union Territories were analysed.
The State with highest percentage of billionaire MLAs are 32 (14%) out of the 223 MLAs of Karnataka, four (7%) out of the 59 MLAs of Arunachal Pradesh, 10 (6%) out of the 174 MLAs of Andhra Pradesh, and 12 (4%) out of the 284 MLAs of Maharashtra who have declared assets worth more than Rs 100 crore.
The state with the highest average assets per MLA is Karnataka (223 MLAs) with average assets of Rs 64.39 crore, followed by Andhra Pradesh (174 MLAs) with average assets of Rs 28.24 crore and Maharashtra (284 MLAs) with average assets of Rs 23.51 crore.
The maximum number of sitting MLAs, 34 (28%), left the INC and joined other parties in current Assemblies, while 15 (13%) of sitting MLAs left the SHS and joined the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray).
In current Assemblies, 50 (42%) out of the total of 120 sitting MLAs who switched political parties joined the BJP followed by 16 (13%) sitting MLAs who joined the TRS and 16 (13%) sitting MLAs who joined the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray).
