The Indian Association of Surgeons for Sleep Apnea said that sleep apnea cases in India may exceed 50 million.

The doctors were speaking at the three-day IASSACON conference held on Sunday.

Speaking on the causes of sleep apnea, the Director of the Department of ENT, Head & Neck Surgery, AIG Hospitals, Dr Srinivas Kishore Sistla said, “Many people complain of waking up tired every day.

This could be a sign of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), a serious sleep disorder that affects breathing during sleep.

OSA can lead to medical complications if left untreated. Don’t ignore symptoms. Loud snoring, gasping for air and daytime sleepiness are the common symptoms of OSA. Through early detection and proper treatment, you can have quality sleep and also improve your overall health.”

A panel discussion was also conducted during which it was revealed that around 50 million people in India are suffering from sleep apnea and there are more people undiagnosed.

With less than 600 sleep labs across the country to conduct an accurate diagnosis, it is essential that more such facilities are opened up and awareness created among not just the public but also among doctors, the doctors said.
