At least 50 students at the SR Prime Junior College took ill due to suspected food poisoning on Sunday night. The incident sparked furore with the students’ unions demanding the cancellation of recognition to the SR Educational Institutes. Though the management of the institutions is collecting huge fees in lakhs of rupees, little attention is being paid to the health of the students, the student unions alleged.

The students in the hostel were served egg biryani and chicken curry on Sunday night. As many as 50 students complained of stomach pain, vomiting and diarrhoea after consuming food. The management ferried some students, who took ill, to Colombo Hospital and some others to Jaya Hospital.

On learning about the incident, a large number of students staged a protest at the two hospitals. They alleged that the SR Educational Institutions were charging lakhs of rupees in fees. But the management of the Educational Institutions failed to serve quality food to students. Each student, the students’ unions said, has been paying fees ranging between Rs 2 lakh and Rs 3 lakh, they said. The student unions came down heavily on the management for not even providing information regarding the incident. The unions demanded that the District Collector order an inquiry into the incident and take action against the guilty.

The BSP Warangal region leader demanded that the government order an inquiry into the incident. He asserted that the students took ill due to food poisoning.

It may be recalled that there were a series of incidents of food poisoning leading to students taking ill. With the State government taking stringent action, the authorities in the government-run schools ensured that quality food is being served to the students. The government asked the District Collector to inspect the Gurukula and KGBV schools periodically.

Colombo Hospital doctor Sukesh Reddy said that the condition of the students was stable.
