The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Red Alert in Telangana warning of very heavy to extremely heavy rain in some areas in the next three days, that is, till July 28.

Suryapet witnessed around 70 mm of rainfall at 9 pm on Tuesday and Karimnagar received around 60 mm of rain. In Hyderabad, Mehdipatnam witnessed 45 mm of rain while the remaining areas of the city got 10 to 15 mm of rain.

In view of the heavy rains, Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao directed Education Minister Sabita Indra Reddy to declare holidays for all educational institutions on July 26 and 27. The School Education Department issued orders declaring a holiday on both days.

Cyberabad Police have advised IT companies to ensure phase-wise logouts for their employees to prevent traffic jams on major roads in view of heavy rains.

The advice for IT companies located in the IT clusters of Hitec City, Raidurgam and Gachibowli came a day after the heavy rains on Monday which caused huge traffic jams on the IKEA-Cyber Tower Road, Bio Diversity Crossroads and Gachibowli.

All companies located in Raheja Mindspace, Purva Summit, Watermark, Phenix (Madhapur)/Kondapur Avance and companies like TCS, HSBC, Dell, Oracle, Qualcomm and Tech Mahindra have been asked to ensure logout for their employees at 3 pm.

These IT parks and companies are located on the IKEA to Cyber Towers Road.

The employees of other IT parks and companies on the IKEA stretch, the Bio Diversity Park and Raidurgam were told to log out for the day at 4.30 pm. This applies to companies located in Knowledge City, Knowledge Park, T-Hub, Galaxy, LTI & Twitza, Commerzone, RMZ Nexity, Skyview 10 & 20, Diyashree Orion and Ascendas.

The Deputy Commissioner of Police, Madhapur, has given 3 pm to 6 pm as the logout time for companies located in the Financial District/Gachibowli.

The companies here are Microsoft, Infosys, Wipro, Centaurus, Broadway, Virtusa, ICICI, Amazon, Honeywell, Hitachi, Sattva Capital, Capgemini, Franklin Templeton and all companies located in the BSR IT Park, Waverock, GAR, Q City and DLF.

A massive downpour on Monday evening led to traffic chaos in the IT clusters and key roads in Madhapur, Gachibowli and adjoining areas. Hundreds of cars were caught in traffic jams extending several kilometres.

The roads and some low-lying areas in the GHMC area remained flooded on Tuesday after Monday night’s heavy rains and thunderstorms which claimed a life. A man lost his life on Monday night after asbestos sheets fell on him in the Abids area. The incident occurred when he had taken shelter near a wall. The sheets fell on him from the fourth floor of an adjacent building. The deceased was identified as Fareed, a labourer.

Heavy to very heavy and extremely heavy rains are likely to occur in Karimnagar, Peddapally, Khammam, Nalgonda, Suryapet, Mahbubabad, Warangal, and Vikarabad while heavy to very heavy rain is likely in the Mancherial, Nizamabad, Bhupalapally, Mulugu, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Hanamkonda, Janagaon, Siddipet, Yadadri Bhuvangiri, Sangareddy, Medak, and Kamareddy districts of Telangana.

A Red Alert means massive water pooling on roads and low-lying areas and traffic congestion. Wet and slippery roads, falling of trees and electric poles, and breakdowns in electricity and water supply and other social disturbances are also likely.

Lightning struck two places in the city, but there were no casualties. In the first incident, a small portion of one of the minarets of the historic Qutb Shahi mosque in Langar Houz was damaged. Another lightning hit was reported from a building in Attapur.

The GHMC’s Disaster Response Force (DRF) teams swung into action to clear fallen trees and stagnant water. After Monday night’s heavy rains, the water level in Hussainsagar once again reached near Full Tank Level (FTL). The water level in the lake rose to 513.46 meters on Tuesday morning against the FTL of 514.75 meters. The four gates of Himayatsagar were opened two feet wide.

The GHMC alerted people living in areas along the discharge channels of Hussainsagar. With the lake continuing to receive inflows and more rains likely in the next three days, the authorities have advised people to shift to safer places.

Due to the heavy rains in North Telangana there are chances of rivers Manair, Kadam, Manjira, Pranahita (Wardha & Wainganga) crossing danger levels.

The Skymet weather website said, “Earlier a cyclonic circulation was over Andhra Pradesh and Telangana which had given rains in this region. Now that circulation has merged with a low pressure area. However, the convergence zone continues to be there as a remnant and will give more rain. The cities of Khammam, Adilabad, Warangal, Ramagundam, Nizamabad, Hyderabad, Medak and Mahbubnagar will experience rain for two more days. After that the rains will lessen.”
