Massive inflows into Kadem medium irrigation projects in the district have triggered panic. With four of the total 18 crest gates got stuck, the engineers had to struggle to lift the gates. The engineers ultimately succeeded in lifting two of the crest gates that got stuck.
The project received unprecedented inflows of 3.80 lakh cusecs. The officials evacuated the people from 12 villages downstream of the project. District Collector K Varun Reddy and MLA Rekah Naik persuaded the people in the village to move to the relief camps.
The officials, however, heaved a sigh of relief by evening with the inflows into the project receding to 2.80 lakh cusecs and two of the four crest gates, which got stuck, could be opened with the help of Earthmover.
The engineers scaled up the outflows. The water level at the project started receding. In view of the last year’s experience, the district administration took all precautions to ensure that the evacuation of people under the project was carried out early. Chief Secretary A Santi Kumar reportedly called the officials and directed them to take all precautionary measures.
Tension built up when four of the crest gates failed to operate. Minister for Forest A Indrakaran Reddy has been in touch with the officials and directed them to take all measures to ensure the safety of people.
Meanwhile, the incessant rains inundated several areas in the district. The GNRS colony remained marooned. The national highway 44 in the Adilabad district was flooded. The Komaram Bheem project in the Komuram Beheem Asifabad district too received heavy inflows. Nine of the crest gates were lifted to let out the floodwaters.
Several colonies in the undivided Adilabad district remained maroon. With floodwater overflowing the bridges at several places, the road connectivity to many villages was cut off.
