The police arrested the accused in the attack on a Dalit woman and registered cases against them under various sections.
SP Mlika Garg told the media here on Wednesday that the police arrested the accused Gangiredy Brahma Reddy and his wife Pullamma of Botlapalem village in Darsi mandal cases under Cr.No.233/2023 U/s 307, 354, 354(??),367, 324, 323, 506 R/w 34 IPC, Sec.3(1)(r),3(1) (e), 3(1)(s), 3(2) (v), SC, ST POA Act registered against them.
The SP said here on Wednesday that on August 15 after midnight, at SC colony at Botlapalem village, the accused dragged the victim K Mounika by holding hair into the street and inflicted her injuries with a knife and stone.
Later they tied her hands and insisted her to withdraw the cases which they registered against them. The accused also poured petrol on the victim in a bid to set her fire. However the police, after receiving the information, rushed to the village and rescued the woman.
Mounika’s younger brother Jakkula Sairam fell in love with a girl Bhargavi, who is the daughter of the accused. They got married against the wishes of Bhagavi’s parents Gangiredy Brahma Reddy and Pullamma.
Fearing threat from parents, Bhargavi approached the SP Maliga Garg and sought protection. The SP spoke to Bhargivi who told her that she willfully married Sairam who is a Dalit. In this backdrop, the accused attacked Mounika who is the elder sister of Bhargavi’s husband Sairam.
