Andhra Pradesh is going ahead with lining works on the Srisailam Right Main Canal which is part of the Rayalaseema LIS violating NGT orders.
ENC Muralidhar requested the KRMB to stop the work. In his letter the ENC said, “It is learnt that the Government of Andhra Pradesh has taken up lining works on the Srisailam Right Main Canal (SRMC) branching off from the Pothireddypadu Head Regulator and a major portion of it has been completed. This is against the NGT (SZ) Order dated 17.12.2021. This lining work is part of the work mentioned in GO: 203 dated 05.05.2020 of the Government of AP.
The NGT directed AP through its order dated 17.12.2021 not to go ahead with the work on the Rayalaseema Lift Irrigation Scheme (RLIS) without obtaining pre-environment clearance and so far the MoEF & CC has not sanctioned the Pre-EC.”
ENC said that if the illegal lining work is completed it will facilitate the huge diversion of Krishna waters from the Srisailam Reservoir to places outside the basin, that is, much more than the capacity of the unlined canal.
In fact, AP has diverted more than 1500 c/s from the Srisailam Reservoir towards CWSS which is not permitted as per the terms of the 1977 Interstate Agreement.
“Hence, the KRMB is requested to take immediate steps to stop this illegal act of the AP Government and protect the legitimate claims of the people of Telangana on Krishna waters,” he said in his letter.
