The Rayalaseema Saguneeti Saadhana Samiti (RSS) wrote a letter to Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy asking him to immediately restore the collapsed Alaganur reservoir and to provide water for irrigation purposes for the Kharif season.

Samiti president Bojja Dasaratharami Reddy said that KC Canal is the oldest irrigation canal in Rayalaseema constructed during 1863 – 70 and it is recognised as a World Heritage Irrigation project and about 2.77 lakh acres used to irrigate through this canal.

Dasaratharami Reddy said that the Sunkesula dam has the capacity to hold only 1.1 TMC of water allocated to the KC Canal which created a lot of difficulties to get water to the last lands of ayacut (catchment). He mentioned that to eliminate these problems, the then Chief Minister NT Rama Rao in 1985 decided for the construction of a reservoir with a capacity of 2.965 TMCs at Alaganur to hold the water flowing in the Tungabhadra River during flood season.

He further mentioned that in the year 2005, the then Chief Minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy started the project and dedicated it to the nation.

He said that the Alaganur reservoir worked for twelve years but later the reservoir started damages and now the condition totally deteriorated as no water can be stored in Alaganur reservoir due to dilapidated conditions.

Dasaratharami Reddy said that a group of farmers visited the Alaganur Reservoir and the conditions of the reservoir left the group of farmers perplexed.
