A developing storm in the Bay of Bengal is poised to transform into a typhoon by Sunday, threatening to make landfall on the south coast of Andhra Pradesh on December 5. Authorities are taking precautionary measures as winds intensify and sea conditions worsen, with waves rising.
Safety signal No 2 has been raised at major ports, including Visakhapatnam, Gangavaram, and Bheemunipatnam, in anticipation of the approaching typhoon. The Meteorological Department warns of further deterioration in weather conditions on Sunday, projecting increased wind speeds and rainfall.
Dr M Suresh Kumar, Nodal Officer of the Meteorological Department, provided critical insights, stating that the low pressure system in the South East Bay of Bengal has evolved into a cyclone and is expected to strengthen into a typhoon in the next two to three days. Rainfall projections indicate potential heavy rainfall on the 5th, with 431.6 mm expected in the Araku division, 315.5 mm in Paderu, and 349.6 mm in the Chinthapalli and Rampachodavaram divisions.
Meteorologists anticipate significant impacts on coastal areas, with strong winds and high waves expected on December 5 and 6. Farmers express concerns about potential damage to rice crops, with approximately 10,000 acres of paddy fields in four mandals already affected during the kharif season. Dr. Suresh Kumar urged farmers to make advance arrangements to safeguard harvested crops from potential damage caused by the anticipated heavy rains.
Responding to the escalating situation, the district administration established control rooms at the Collectorate on Saturday. Collector A Mallikarjuna stated in response to the Meteorological Department’s warning, urging residents to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions. Tribal communities are advised against travel across banks and streams, with a warning to refrain from fishing until the typhoon’s effects subside. Officials at the mandal and division levels have been directed to be readily available locally.
