Telugu Desam Party (TDP) national general secretary, Nara Lokesh, declared on Monday that the TDP staunchly rejects the privatisation of the Vizag Steel Plant (VSP). He asserted that once the party regains power, they will actively voice their opposition in Parliament against any move to privatise the crucial industrial facility.
During his ‘Yuvagalam’ padayatra in Gajuwaka, Lokesh assured the displaced individuals from the steel plant that the TDP, under his leadership, would take measures to ensure justice for those affected. He pledged the party’s commitment to cooperate with the plant’s requirements, including the allocation of captive mines essential for its survival.
Lokesh sympathetically acknowledged the concerns raised by the steel plant displaced, who pointed out that even after 40 years, they have not received justice for the lands they contributed to the project. The displaced individuals highlighted the looming threat of privatisation by the Central government, expressing fears of losing both compensation for their lands and the promised job opportunities.
Appealing to Lokesh, the displaced urged the TDP to retain the steel plant in the public sector if the party assumes power in the upcoming polls. Lokesh emphasised the historical significance of the steel plant, citing its unique location along the seashore and its integral role in Andhra’s self-respect. He adamantly stated that privatization would not be allowed at any cost.
Despite the Central government’s announcement of the plant’s privatisation, Lokesh criticised Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy’s silence on the matter. Lokesh also alleged that Jagan had devised a plan to acquire 8,000 acres of the steel plant in collaboration with local industrialists. He assured that a future TDP government would take proactive steps to safeguard the welfare and security of the steel plant employees and workers.
Lokesh concluded by reaffirming the TDP’s commitment to address the concerns of the steel plant displaced and implement all promises made to them, signalling a proactive stance on the matter.
