The leader-based politics of the BRS is worrying its cadres. When the BRS was in power its MLAs were given extensive powers. So BRS MLAs behaved as if they were Chief Ministers of their constituencies.
The BRS leadership thought that the MLAs would bring them a hat-trick victory in the Assembly elections. But contrary to BRS expectations the negativity of its MLAs defeated them and the party in the Assembly elections.
Now the BRS is in the opposition. After losing power the BRS is now focusing on its MLCs. When the BRS was in power it gave more importance to its MLAs than MLCs.
Even though the BRS was defeated in Assembly elections it enjoys a majority in the Legislative Council. There are speculations that some BRS MLCs are planning to jump to Congress. The BRS leadership is not giving importance to them to ensure that they do not leave the party.
In districts also the BRS is planning to give importance to MLCs as it gave to MLAs when it was in power. The BRS’s policy of giving importance to MLAs when in power and giving importance to MLCs when it is in the opposition is creating discontent among its cadres. This kind of leader-based politics is worrying BRS cadres.
The BRS cadres think that their leadership is giving importance to them only during elections and after that they are being ignored and importance is given only to elected representatives. They think that it is because of their hard work they became public representatives and that the leadership is forgetting this reality.
Only cadre-based parties survive in politics and leader-based parties will not survive for long. The Congress came to power after 10 years in Telangana because of its cadres. Leaders may change loyalties in power politics. But cadres of a party are intact whether the party is in power or not.
BRS workers are telling the leadership they have to make the party cadre-based and not leader-based.
