Elaborate arrangements are underway for the twelfth edition of the Multilateral Exercise (MILAN) scheduled from February 19 to 27, as Visakhapatnam, the City of Destiny, braces itself for a grand naval spectacle. With the Eastern Naval Command (ENC) anticipating the largest-ever participation in the history of MILAN, preparations are in full swing to host delegates from over 50 countries. The event aims to enhance professional interaction between friendly navies and gain experience in multilateral large-force operations at sea. Originally conceived in 1995 as part of India’s ‘Look East Policy,’ MILAN has grown in significance, aligning with the Government of India’s ‘Act East’ policy and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Security and Growth for All’ (SAGAR) initiative.
During a comprehensive review of arrangements for the event on Saturday, District Collector Dr A Mallikharjuna said  “We are committed to delivering a flawless experience for everyone involved in Milan-2024. Our meticulous preparations encompass every aspect, from security and sanitation to public convenience and accessibility. With close collaboration across departments and the Navy, we are confident in hosting a truly memorable event that showcases India’s maritime prowess and international cooperation.”
Stringent measures are being implemented to ensure the safety and security of VVIPs, VIPs, foreign dignitaries, and the general public. Dedicated VVIP and VIP protection protocols are in place, alongside the strategic deployment of barricades and CCTV cameras to manage crowd movement effectively.
Recognizing the anticipated influx of visitors, Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) has prioritized accessibility and comfort. Over 30 bio-toilets will be readily available, while strategically placed LED screens will allow citizens to witness the celebratory events live. Ample drinking water facilities will also cater to the needs of the large crowds. Commissioner of GVMC CM Saikanth Verma said “We understand the significance of Milan-2024 not only for the city but also for the nation.
Our focus is on creating a welcoming and comfortable environment for all visitors. Efficient coordination and meticulous planning are paramount, and we are confident that our collaborative efforts will make this event a resounding success.”
Recognizing the importance of public health, a joint disinfection drive will be undertaken in all areas designated for the celebrations. This proactive approach ensures a safe and hygienic environment for all participants. Designated parking areas at APIIC and AU grounds will ensure efficient traffic management and minimize inconvenience for attendees. Emphasizing the importance of seamless coordination across departments, Dr. Mallikharjuna urged close collaboration between all involved entities, including the Navy, police, and civic authorities. This unified effort will guarantee a smooth and successful event.
