All forms of clean and renewable energy will be promoted by the government at a very rapid pace, reducing the production of energy by coal, Minister for Irrigation and Civil Supplies N Uttam Kumar Reddy said, The difference between the previous government and the present government is that “we are transparent and we stay grounded.”
Uttam Kumar Reddy assured that he would do everything possible to promote renewable energy. He also mentioned that the solar energy tariff has come down to less than the cost of coal production, which is a very good sign.
He assured that a Commission on Environmental and Development would be proposed, stating that the government is ready to take any suggestions for sustainable development.
He was participating as a chief guest in the media workshop on “Clean Energy Transition in India: Focus on Telangana” at the Telangana Tourism Plaza hotel here on Saturday.
He said that by a series of coincidences and circumstances, he has been interested in renewable and clean energy and climate change issues for the last 20 to 25 years. He pointed out that as a member of Parliament, he was invited to speak at COP27 in Egypt in 2022. He also said that out of passion and interest, he has been addressing and speaking at many international forums on renewable energy, carbon emissions, and other subjects.
Uttam Kumar Reddy said he has been a member of Parliamentary standing Committee on Energy where many discussions were held on reducing carbon emissions with targets set for 2030, 2050, and 2070. The Government of India also planned for Carbon Net Zero emissions by 2070, although many noted that none of us might be alive by then.
The Minister emphasised that targets needed to be set closer to the present, stressing that mankind has been exploiting resources in an unbridled fashion and that society has become hugely consumptive worldwide. He quoted Mahatma Gandhi, saying, “There is enough for everybody’s need on this earth, but it is not enough for everybody’s greed.”
He said that mankind is singularly set to destroy the earth, which consists of millions of flora and fauna, and that we must own the earth and leave it to our children as it used to be.
He also said that despite all targets being set, carbon emissions and global warming are increasing, along with unbearable climate changes. He warned that “if we do not act now, our very existence will be doomed.”
