Maize fetches record price of Rs 2,960 a quintal

Maize has commanded record price in Enumamula market yard on August 30, fetching Rs 2,960 per quintal, which is unheard of in the past. The farmers are jubilant over the record price the commodity and felt that the cultivation of maize was profitable this time.
It broke the previous record the market and on Friday. The commodity was procured in the market yard at a record price of Rs 2,960 a quintal, the highest in the annals of the commodity, according to officials of the Enumamula market yard.
A quintal of maize was procured at Rs 2,885 on Tuesday, Rs 2,911 on Wednesday and Rs 2936 on Thursday.
The officials have declared three days holidays to the Agricultural Market at Khammam. On August 31 and September 1 the market will remain closed on account of weekend holidays. However, on September 2 the market yard will remain closed on account of new moon day. The operations of the market will resume from September 3 onwards. The officials have been asking the farmers to note the holidays and bring their commodity from Wednesday onwards.
The market yards in Telangana have started procuring green gram from Friday at the MSP through the Markfed. The procurement centres have been set up in seven districts – Mahabubabad, Khammam, Sangareddy, Vikarabad, Suryapeta, Narayanapeta and Kamareddy, where the area of cultivation under the greengram is high. The Centre fixed the MSP of green gram at Rs 8,682 per quintal.
Agriculture Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao revealed that the area under green gram during the current kharif was 64,175 acres. The total green crop yield is predicted to be 17,841 tonnes.
The Minister said that the Markfed would procure the green gram at the MSP and asked the farmers to adhere to the quality specifications and get the MSP for the commodity.
