Minister for Roads and Buildings Komatireddy Venkata Reddy on Tuesday stated that the credit for Telangana’s statehood goes to martyrs. He emphasised that September 17 is a significant day in Telangana’s history, marking the day when the people of Telangana gained freedom from the oppressive rule of the Nizam.
To commemorate Telangana People’s Governance Day, he hoisted the national flag at the Police Parade Grounds in Nalgonda district on Tuesday.
In his address on the occasion, the Minister noted that although India gained independence on August 15, 1947, Hyderabad State did not join the Indian Union at that time. The then Nizam declared that Hyderabad would remain independent. Under the Nizam’s autocratic rule, the feudal land ownership system, jagirdari system, forced labor, and tax collection were deeply exploitative, leading the people of Telangana to launch a resistance against the Nizam’s regime. Farmers, women, and common people united to intensify the struggle for Hyderabad State’s merger into the Indian Union. The Andhra Jan Sabha and Andhra Mahasabha leaders played a crucial role in awakening the Telangana people, with Nalgonda district playing a pivotal role in the armed struggle.
Realising the increasing attacks on people by Razakars and landlords in Hyderabad State, then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and Home Minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel deployed the army to integrate Hyderabad State into India. On September 17, 1948, the Nizam announced Hyderabad’s merger with the Indian Union, which is why this day is celebrated as People’s Governance Day, he said.
The government is implementing promises made during the elections, including new job opportunities through job calendars, free RTC bus travel for women under the Mahalakshmi scheme, increasing the Aarogyasri limit, and providing gas cylinders at a subsidized rate. The Indiramma Housing Scheme is being launched, providing free electricity up to 200 units under the Gruha Jyothi scheme, and farmers are receiving loan waivers. In Nalgonda district, 1433 crores of loan waivers have been given to 1,73,000 farmer families. The Minister assured continued support to Nalgonda district farmers.
