The Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) has made a key decision to distribute drinking water to the devotees waiting in queue lines for having darshan of goddess Durga Devi during the Dasara Sarannavaratri festivities at the Sri Durga Malleswara Swamy Varla Devasthanam in Vijayawada. The Dasara festivities will take place from October 3 to 12. The responsibility of drinking water distribution has been entrusted to the VMC.
In view of the Dasara celebrations which will begin in the city on October 3, Municipal Commissioner HM Dhyanachandra held a key meeting with the VMC department heads at the Command Control Room on Tuesday. The conference focused on providing drinking water, sanitation facilities, temporary toilets, cloakrooms, and other amenities.
Speaking on the occasion, Commissioner Dhyanachandra said that although 25 water distribution points have been established, necessary steps should be taken to provide drinking water directly to the devotees standing in queue lines. Additional staff should be deployed to ensure that the devotees between two water points do not face any shortage of water. For that, necessary instructions have been issued to all department heads, he added.
Further, he emphasised the need for uninterrupted basic amenities for the devotees. He stressed the importance of ensuring that facilities like drinking water, temporary toilets, and cloakrooms are fully operational and maintained cleanly. He instructed the officials to increase staff presence.
Besides, Dhyanachandra directed the officials to ensure that temporary toilets are regularly cleaned and maintained without any lapses. He also emphasised monitoring sanitation in 31 designated areas, instructing officials to ensure that sanitation workers are vigilant.
He said that for the convenience of devotees, the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation has set up free cloakrooms and shoe stands at six locations: Rath Centre, in front of the VMC main office, Seethamma Vari Paadalu, Kummaripalem Centre, Punnami Ghat, and Padmavati Ghat.
VMC Chief Medical Health Officer (CMOH) Dr P Ratnavali, Chief City Planner GVGSV Prasad, Deputy Commissioner (Revenue) G Srijana, in-charge Chief Engineer Rammohana Rao, Estate Officer T Srinivas and others were present.
