The Andhra Pradesh Red Cross, in partnership with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Geneva, officially launched the Climate Action Campaign here on Wednesday. The campaign aims to raise awareness about climate change among students and prepare them as community-based climate change agents.
Dr A Sridhar Reddy, Chairman of the AP Red Cross, inaugurated the campaign during a workshop held at a local hotel. He emphasised that the AP Red Cross has been at the forefront of various social initiatives, which is why the ICRC chose Vijayawada as the pilot location for this project in India.
The workshop saw participation from the principals of 40 government and private colleges in and around Vijayawada. AK Parida, retired IAS officer and General Secretary of the AP Red Cross, elaborated on the campaign’s objectives. He explained that the initiative aims to educate college students about the impacts of climate change and train them as Climate Change Agents who will lead mitigation activities at the local level.
Under this campaign, 100 students from each participating college will be identified and enrolled as Youth Red Cross volunteers. These students will form a Climate Action Group (CAG), with one faculty member from each institution serving as the Campaign Coordinator. Students will be encouraged to register as volunteers through the AP Red Cross app available on the Google Play Store.
