Union Minister of Civil Aviation, K Rammohan Naidu, inaugurated two new flights between Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada at Visakhapatnam International Airport on Sunday. Operated by IndiGo and Air India Express, these new services represent a significant move to strengthen air connectivity in the region. Minister Naidu stressed that “Connectivity is essential for any region’s development, and the Ministry of Civil Aviation is making all efforts to enhance air connectivity from Andhra Pradesh’s cities to the rest of India and beyond.”
Addressing the gathering, Minister Naidu highlighted the collaborative efforts of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, and Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan in advancing Andhra Pradesh’s development. “Our vision is to make Andhra Pradesh a prime investment destination, and strong connectivity plays a crucial role,” he said.
The Ministry has launched new flights on various routes, including Vijayawada to Mumbai and Bengaluru, and Tirupati to Delhi. A new flight has also begun operations from Kadapa to Hyderabad, with another from Rajahmundry to Delhi starting December 1.
The Civil Aviation Ministry is also focused on expanding international cargo services, aiming to position Visakhapatnam as a global logistics hub. Following directives from Chief Minister Naidu, the ministry has fast-tracked the Bhogapuram International Airport project, now set for completion by June 2026.
Further, the Minister announced upgrades for Vijayawada Airport, with improvements expected within nine months.
New terminals are also planned for Rajahmundry and Kadapa Airports, while Tirupati Airport will undergo renovations to reflect its spiritual heritage. In a special gesture for Ayyappa devotees visiting Sabarimala, the ministry has permitted travelers to carry their ‘Irumudi’ on board until January 20, 2025.
Addressing safety concerns, Naidu emphasized the government’s stringent response to hoax bomb threats, with strict penalties for offenders. The Civil Aviation Ministry will introduce two new regulations, including a flying ban for those found guilty of such actions.
Also present at the event were Rajya Sabha Member Golla Babu Rao, Visakhapatnam West MLA PGVR Naidu, and officials from the Airports Authority of India, Air India, and IndiGo.
