A group of public representatives from the Maldives has arrived in Visakhapatnam district on an educational tour, meeting with District Collector MN Harendhira Prasad to discuss local administrative and community engagement practices. The delegation explored Pendurthi and surrounding areas, seeking insight into the district’s governance and self-help group structures.
During their visit to the Mandal Parishad Development Office in Pendurthi, the delegates observed how the Panchayati Raj system functions at the grassroots-level. The Maldivian representatives expressed particular interest in how self-help groups operate, including their financial management, savings methods, and income generation efforts.
“The Panchayati Raj system showcases how decentralised governance can effectively connect with the needs of the people,” one of the Maldivian delegates remarked. “This visit has given us invaluable insights into community-driven growth and accountability.”
The delegation also engaged in dialogues with members of local self-help groups, discussing the groups’ structure, savings plans, and the significant role they play in economic empowerment. Later, in a formal meeting at the Collectorate, the delegation presented their observations and raised questions about district-level administrative methods. Collector Harendhira Prasad took the opportunity to provide a comprehensive overview of local governance, covering administrative protocols and development strategies.
“It’s always encouraging to share our practices with international representatives,” said the Collector. “The questions from our guests reflect a genuine interest in understanding and possibly adopting similar frameworks in their own regions.”
DPO Srinivasa Rao, DRDA officers, and several other officials participated in the meeting, adding perspectives on various aspects of local governance and answering queries. The visit highlighted a productive exchange of ideas, underscoring the value of cross-cultural collaboration in governance. “Our goal is to adapt and learn from global examples to benefit our own people back home,” noted one of the delegates.
