Visakhapatnam’s iconic TU-142 Museum is set to become even more captivating with the addition of a decommissioned Sikorsky UH-3H helicopter. This formidable aircraft, known as ‘Saaras’ served the Eastern Naval Command (ENC) for over two decades, playing a crucial role in various operations.
The UH-3H, inducted into the INAS 350 Squadron and christened ‘Saaras’ on March 24, 2009, was decommissioned earlier this year on June 28, 2024.
Over its illustrious career, the helicopter served as a workhorse in Special Operations for Marine Commandos (Marcos), Search and Rescue (SAR) missions, and humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations.
“The Eastern Naval Command has generously gifted this historic helicopter to the museum,” said an official from the district administration. “It was brought to the museum on Wednesday and will be inaugurated soon.”
The helicopter’s arrival at the museum marks a significant milestone in the city’s naval heritage. It will be displayed alongside other iconic naval assets, providing visitors with a unique opportunity to learn about the Indian Navy’s rich history and its contributions to national security.
A naval officer, reflecting on the helicopter’s legacy, said, “The UH-3H was renowned for its durability, heavy lift capacity, and endurance. It truly lived up to its name, ‘Saaras,’ symbolising strength, valour, and perseverance. It’s a fitting addition to the museum, alongside other legendary assets like the TU-142 aircraft, Sea Harrier jet, and INS Kursura submarine.”
The TU-142 Museum, a popular tourist attraction, is expected to draw even more visitors with the addition of ‘Saaras’. The helicopter’s inclusion will provide visitors with a deeper understanding of the Indian Navy’s history and achievements. Earlier this year, during the decommissioning ceremony, Vice-Admiral Sameer Saxena, Chief of Staff, ENC, presented a commemorative plaque to the State government.
The TU-142 Museum continues to be a testament to Visakhapatnam’s strong connection with the Indian Navy. With the addition of the Sikorsky UH-3H, the museum is further solidifying its position as a hub of naval and aviation history.
