Producer SKN, known for his blockbuster Baby, sparked outrage with his comments on Telugu actresses. Speaking at the pre-release event of Return of the Dragon, he openly stated that he and his director friend Sai Rajesh do not want to encourage Telugu actresses. While welcoming Tamil actress Kayadu Lohar to the industry, SKN remarked that his previous experience with Telugu actresses had been disappointing, which led him to avoid working with them in the future.
His remarks drew severe backlash from all corners of the film industry, with many questioning his stance. Following the outrage, SKN has now attempted to clarify his statement, claiming that his words were misunderstood. He insists that his comments were made in a “lighthearted” manner and were not meant to be taken seriously. However, this justification hasn’t convinced everyone.
“What is there to joke about in such a statement?” questioned an anonymous producer, criticising SKN’s attempt to downplay the controversy. The backlash intensified, with many industry professionals condemning the remarks as unnecessary and damaging to Telugu talent.
Amidst growing criticism, SKN took to social media to defend himself, asserting that he has always been a strong supporter of Telugu actresses. “I am one of the few producers who have introduced many Telugu actresses to the industry. A lighthearted comment I made recently was misunderstood, leading to unnecessary headlines with incorrect meanings,” he wrote.
In an attempt to mend the situation, he further stated that he plans to introduce even more Telugu talent in various fields of cinema. “To clarify, I have introduced eight talented individuals to the industry so far and am set to introduce 25 more talented Telugu girls across 4-5 different crafts in cinema through my upcoming films. Supporting and promoting Telugu talent has always been my priority,” he added.
This incident follows a pattern of controversial remarks by industry figures, including actors Prudhvi and Chiranjeevi, which have often led to negative publicity rather than helping film promotions. Many believe such statements only serve to spotlight the individuals making them rather than contributing positively to the industry.
Despite SKN’s damage control efforts, the controversy has left a lasting impact, raising serious discussions about the treatment of Telugu actresses in the industry. Whether his promise to promote more Telugu talent will restore his credibility remains to be seen.
