Hyderabad District Election Officer (DEO) Ronald Rose said that all shifted, dead and absent voters of 3.41 lakh in the GHMC area were deleted from the voters list after the Assembly elections- 2023, in addition to 4.37 lakh voters in 2023 before the Assembly elections.
The Election Commission of India (ECI) held a conference on “Low voter turnout’ at Nirvachan Sadan, New Delhi with Municipal Commissioners and District Election Officers (DEO) from select districts to increase voter turnout in Lok Sabha Elections- 2024. On that occasion, a booklet on voter apathy was released by the ECI.
Telangana is one of the 11 states which has a voter turnout (VTR) lower than the national average of 67.40 per cent in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Telangana has recorded 62.77 per cent of voter turnout.
According to the ECI’s data of lowest VTR in general election to the Lok Sabha-2019, Hyderabad is in fourth place in the lowest percentage of poll with 44.84 after three constituencies in the Jammu and Kashmir.
Secunderabad and Malk ajgiri constituencies have recorded 46.50 per cent and 49.63 per cent of VTR, respectively.
Ronald Rose said that Hyderabad city recorded a low polling percentage of 45.65 during the 2019 general elections. Recalling an analysis made through a survey post Assembly elections, he attributed the low voting to primarily shifting of voters and the fact that they work out of town or country besides daily wage earner going for work despite holiday declared on polling day, voters in a single family being allotted to different booths and long waiting time in queues at some places. Also that most of the people who have shifted elsewhere resist getting their votes deleted here saying that they will come to vote here.
He also informed that about 76,000 voters were shifted to address the split voters issue in 15 Assembly segments under Hyderabad district after the 2023 Assembly elections.
The DEO mentioned that nearly 4,500 Swatch autos are being utilised to blare out the songs highlighting the commission messages for increased voter participation. Youths will be employed to manage the voters’ queue in the booths besides informing voters about queue length using mobile phones.
