Retired IAS officer Somesh Kumar and the Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union (TGPWU) released a study named ‘An Introduction to the World of Platform-Based Taxi Work: A Simple Reader for Taxi Customers and the General Public,’ on Monday.

The study was conducted by the Centre for Labour Studies at the National Law School in Bengaluru and the Montfort Social Institute in Hyderabad in collaboration with the TGPWU. It examines the work, lives and earnings of these workers through detailed discussions with them.

Shaik Salauddin, the State President of the Telangana Four Wheeler Drivers Association, said that although Ola and Uber are known for their cheap services they dupe drivers by attracting them to their platform promising good earnings but that never materializes.

“Drivers rarely earn incentives and do not get enough rides on many days even after waiting for long hours. They have also to sign one-sided agreements,” he said.

Individual taxi drivers are better placed than those engaged through taxi platforms as they can directly negotiate ride terms and are better equipped to resolve disputes through direct negotiations with customers.
