A recent study by AIG Hospital seems to have discovered immunotherapy for liver cancer.

Immunotherapy Atezolizumab–Bevacizumab uses the immune system of the body and kills cancer cells. In real-world settings, if the treatment is found to be safe and effective in liver cancer cases it can be used if surgery is not feasible. With the right selection of patients, Atezolizumab–Bevacizumab can achieve a good response in terms of survival and disappearance of the tumour (resolution of tumour).

As part of the study, 67 patients having tumours which were irremovable through surgery were operated upon. These patients received Atezolizumab– Bevacizumab treatment from November 2020 to July 2022. 59 of the patients were from AIG Hospital while eight others were from the Mahatma Gandhi Medical College in Jaipur. The research findings revealed that the therapy was successful in halting disease progression in 66.12% of the patients. It further revealed that 12.9% of the patients achieved complete resolution of tumour, and 25.8% achieved partial resolution or shrinking of the tumours. In patients with good liver function, overall survival was 21 months.
