Dr Madhabananda Kar, Director and CEO of AIIMS Mangalagiri, announced the successful launch of the institute’s kidney transplant programme, with three live-related kidney transplant surgeries completed within a month.
Addressing the media at the AIIMS auditorium in Mangalagiri on Thursday, Dr Kar stated that the first live-related kidney transplant was performed on 30th August 2024, on a 29-year-old male recipient, Maddela Sri Ram, a medical representative from Vijayawada. He received a kidney from his 46-year-old mother, M Shyamala Devi. The surgery was led by a team of dedicated surgeons, urologists, and nephrologists, with mentorship from expert surgeons Dr V Seenu and Dr A Krishna of AIIMS New Delhi, and was overseen by Dr Uttara Das, HoD of Nephrology. Sri Ram is recovering well.
In late September, two more transplants were successfully carried out. Kalyanam Gouri Prasad, a private employee from a village near Razole in Dr BR Ambedkar Konaseema District, received a kidney from his 47-year-old mother, K Durgamma. Another patient, Thrasula Sai Surya Prakash, a 30-year-old software engineer, received a kidney from his 51-year-old mother, T Govardhani.
Dr Kar also highlighted that over the past year, AIIMS Mangalagiri has been providing comprehensive palliative care services. A dedicated team has been offering home visits to patients in the Mangalagiri and Nutakki areas, focusing on symptom management and emotional support.
