NTR District Collector S Dilli Rao has said that measures are being taken to achieve the target of providing 72 lakh working days in the district this year through the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee scheme (MGNREGS). So far, 32.22 lakh working days have been provided and the workers are being paid an average wage of Rs 255 per day.

On Wednesday, Collector Dilli Rao made a surprise inspection of the MGNREGS works being done near Kothuru Tadepalli village of Vijayawada rural mandal and interacted with the workers. Later, he said that this year, a target of providing 72 lakh working days to laborers under the Employment Guarantee Scheme has been set in NTR district. He said that plans are being made to achieve the target set by the government. The Govinda Rao pond with an extent of four acres near Kothuru Tadepalli is being developed through MGNREGS works. He said that 3,500 working days were to be provided for this, but so far 2,200 days have been completed and the workers are being paid wages on time.

The workers brought to the notice of the DC that due to the negligence of field assistant Pramod Kumar,  who did not upload the attendance of 40 workers, their wages have not been received. Dwama Project Director has been directed to recover the salary from the concerned field assistant and pay the wages to the workers.

He directed the officials and staff to work in coordination to make the district a leader by providing 100 per cent working days this year. Works like development of minor irrigation tanks, canals for agriculture and digging of trenches should be undertaken with advance planning.

He said to undertake works to provide an average wage of Rs 272 per day to the workers on the basis of the work they have done and steps should be taken to ensure that workers work for an extra hour if necessary.

The District Collector said that drinking water facility, ORS packets and first aid kits should be kept handy for the labourers in view of summer.
