The Andhra Pradesh government has officially declared May 28, the birth anniversary of former chief minister Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao (NTR), as a State function to be observed annually.
The decision was formalised through Government Order MS No. 54, issued by Chief Secretary K. Vijayanand, in recognition of NTR’s lasting legacy as a pioneering leader, celebrated actor, and ardent champion of Telugu culture and identity. “In recognition of the extraordinary life and legacy of Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao, whose visionary leadership, artistic genius, and unwavering devotion to the Telugu cause have left an indelible imprint on Andhra Pradesh, the Government hereby orders that 28th May of every year shall be observed as a State Function,” the order read.
NTR, a towering figure in the political and cultural history of Andhra Pradesh, served as Chief Minister and introduced landmark welfare reforms grounded in social justice and decentralisation. His portrayal of mythological and historical characters on screen reignited pride in Telugu heritage, language, and folklore.
Describing him as “an undisputed icon of Telugu pride,” the government noted that NTR’s impact transcends cinema and politics, continuing to inspire generations to uphold Telugu identity as a cornerstone of their collective destiny.
All government departments, heads of departments, and district magistrates have been directed to make suitable arrangements for the annual observance.
