Andhra Pradesh’s solar energy capacity has achieved a significant milestone, reaching an installed capacity of 4,552.12 megawatts (MW) by June 30, 2023. In the fiscal year 2022-23, the state’s solar power generation amounted to an impressive 8,140.72 million units (MU). These figures were disclosed in a session of the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday, where Minister of New and Renewable Energy and Power, RK Singh, responded to a query from Rajya Sabha member Parimal Nathwani.

Minister Singh’s update highlighted that the entire nation has witnessed remarkable progress in solar energy deployment. As of June 30, 2023, India’s cumulative solar power capacity has surged to an impressive 70,096 MW. It’s noteworthy that the country’s solar power potential stands at an estimated 748,990 MW, indicating that there remains substantial untapped potential in the solar energy sector. The statement underscores that solar projects predominantly materialize through private investments, with project developers being selected through tariff-based competitive bidding, catering to captive consumption, third-party sales, and more. Presently, a substantial 55.90 GW of solar projects are actively under implementation.

Inquiring about the broader landscape, Shri Nathwani sought information regarding the total installed solar power generation capacity within the nation, the extent to which this potential has been harnessed, and plans for expanding commercial solar power facilities across the country.

The minister’s response outlined the government’s multifaceted efforts to bolster renewable energy, with a particular emphasis on solar energy, across the nation. The government has facilitated Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) up to 100% through the automatic route.

Additionally, the waiver of Inter State Transmission System (ISTS) charges for inter-state sale of solar and wind power projects scheduled for commissioning by June 30, 2025, has been sanctioned. The trajectory for Renewable Purchase Obligation (RPO) has been set until the fiscal year 2029-30, promoting the integration of renewable energy sources. Furthermore, the government has issued directives ensuring that power dispatch occurs against a Letter of Credit (LC) or advance payment, thereby guaranteeing prompt payment from distribution licensees to renewable energy generators. The recent introduction of the Green Term Ahead Market (GTAM) aims to facilitate the trading of Renewable Energy Power through exchanges, fostering a more dynamic renewable energy market.

This announcement underscores the remarkable strides made in India’s solar energy landscape, shedding light on its achievements and future prospects.
