AR Rahman felt ‘Pigeonholed in H’wood’ even after winning Oscars

Must read

AR Rahman is a world-renowned music composer who has received widespread acclaim, including an Academy Award, for his work over the years. In an interview with Forbes, AR Rahman discussed how, despite his international success in films such as 127 Hours, Million Dollar Arm, and Pele, he was pigeonholed.

AR Rahman discussed his directorial debut, Le Musk, as well as his desire to explore with his creative process and new technology. During a recent interaction “As an Indian composer, winning an Oscar and all that stuff, there is a pigeonhole you are put into. ‘Oh Indian stuff, let’s go to AR!’ Even though I have done 127 Hours, Pele and other stuff but still the urge… There’s nothing bad with that. I am doing a lot of Indian movies. I love doing Indian movies. I am proud. But I also love to do something that is completely unrelated to India, as a creative expression. To get those is very difficult in Hollywood, all the places are already taken.”

Rahman had scripted history when back in 2009, he won two Academy Awards for his work in the film Slumdog Millionaire. He had won the Oscars for Best Original Score, and the Best Original Song for Jai Ho.

In 2011, he was once again nominated in both the categories by the Academy for his work in the film 127 Hours, however, he could not win it that year.
