ATM security in Vizag under lens

A recent surge in ATM thefts has prompted heightened scrutiny of security measures in Visakhapatnam. Despite initial robust security protocols, a combination of cost-cutting measures and increased reliance on digital banking has left many ATMs vulnerable to criminal activity. While the city boasts over 500 ATMs, the initial security measures, including private security guards and CCTV surveillance, have gradually diminished. The decline in ATM usage due to the rise of online banking and UPI transactions has led banks to reduce operational costs, resulting in fewer security personnel and neglected maintenance of surveillance equipment.
“The focus has shifted from security to cost-cutting, leaving many ATMs in a vulnerable state,” commented a bank official on condition of anonymity. This vulnerability has been exploited by criminals who have employed advanced techniques, such as gas cutters, to breach ATM cash containers. In response to the escalating situation, Commissioner of Police Sankhabratha Bagchi has prioritised ATM security. “The recent incidents have underscored the urgent need to strengthen ATM security,” stated Bagchi. “We are taking immediate steps to address this issue and prevent further crimes.”
The Commissioner has initiated discussions with representatives from banks operating ATMs and cash replenishment agencies.
Notices have been issued to both parties, emphasising the necessity of stringent security measures, including the mandatory deployment of security guards, functional CCTV cameras, and improved surveillance. “Ensuring the safety of ATM users is paramount,” emphasised Bagchi. “By implementing these measures, we aim to restore public confidence and deter criminal activities.”
Additionally, the Commissioner has suggested the introduction of new protocols, such as displaying emergency contact numbers at ATMs, to facilitate swift
communication between
bank officials and law enforcement in case of suspicious activity.
