The Telangana High Court on Friday ordered the Director General of Police (DGP) of Telangana to file a report on the alleged attack on an advocate.
A Bench comprising Chief Justice Alok Aradhe and Justice J Sreenivas Rao took a suo motu congnisance on the basis of a news item published in a newspaper. It states that a police officer of Borabanda police station allegedly beat advocate Santhosh.
The court pointed out that previously also, incidents of the alleged misbehavior of the police officers on members of the bar were reported. An incident was reported at Madannapet police station, where a police officer allegedly beat advocate Khaleem. Therefore, the court took suo motu cognisance.
The Bench said that if this can happen with an advocate, what about ordinary citizens who go to police stations.
During the arguments, the counsel requested the court to withdraw the suo motu petition. The court refused to do so and said, “We have taken suo motu cognizance and we will hear everyone. If you have any valuable suggestions to make on this issue, we will hear you. Bar is most welcome to give any suggestions. This is a matter of community as a whole. We are concerned on this issue. The object is to be heard; whosoever has to make a valuable contribution we will hear.”
The court ordered the counsel for the State to find out what happened in that incident. “CCTV footage must be there. Why did he go there? For whom and for what reason did he go there?.” The court said that everyone (advocates) is welcome to give suggestions to what should be done. The court will hear the petition on October 16.
