Andhra University (AU) is poised for a significant overhaul as it gears up for its centenary celebrations in 2026. Minister for Human Resource Development and IT and Electronics, Nara Lokesh, has announced an ambitious agenda to elevate the institution to global standards. “The centenary of Andhra University is not just a milestone; it’s an opportunity to elevate the institution to global standards,” stated Lokesh. “Our vision is to bring together the brightest minds from AU’s alumni network to contribute to the university’s development.” The proposed advisory board will serve as a crucial link between the university and its extensive alumni network, estimated at two to three lakh graduates, many of whom hold influential positions worldwide. This initiative, conceived after discussions with Grandhi Mallikarjuna Rao, chairman of GMR Group and founder of the AU Alumni Association, aims to institutionalise alumni’s participation in the university’s growth.
“This board will not only provide strategic guidance, but also foster a sense of ownership among the alumni,” said a senior university official. “Their involvement is critical to AU’s advancement on the global stage.”
The board will comprise the alumni, officials from the Higher Education Department, and AU representatives, mirroring the structure of similar boards at leading national and international universities. Lokesh indicated that a follow-up meeting with AU officials and key alumni is imminent to finalise the board’s structure and objectives.

Adding to the anticipation, Lokesh teased another significant development for AU. “We are planning something extraordinary that will have a lasting impact on the university and its students. Details will be revealed soon,” he said.
A university source suggested that AU’s existing startup and incubation ecosystem, ‘Aa Hub,’ could be expanded into a mega innovation centre. “Such a centre could position AU as a hub for research and entrepreneurship across Andhra Pradesh,” the source said.  University officials and students are optimistic that these initiatives will drive progress in research, innovation, and international collaboration. “This is an opportunity to set a new benchmark for higher education in our State,” said a senior faculty member at AU.
