In an inspiring act of compassion and service, Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) on Monday felicitated three individuals who helped a woman deliver her baby onboard an RTC bus. Managing Director V.C. Sajjanar honoured conductor Raj Kumar, private hired bus driver Venu Gopal, and ASHA worker Malli Kanthamma at Bus Bhavan for their timely and humane response.

The Corporation also announced a lifetime free bus pass for the newborn girl born onboard the Hyderabad-Kollapur Express. ASHA worker Kanthamma, who assisted in the delivery, was awarded a one-year free pass to travel in Deluxe and Super Luxury RTC services.

The incident occurred on April 15, when Suvarna, a pregnant woman returning to her hometown after medical tests in Nagarkurnool, experienced sudden labour pains near Adirala village in Peddakothapally mandal. ASHA worker Kanthamma, accompanying her, alerted the bus staff. Acting swiftly, conductor Raj Kumar and driver Venu Gopal stopped the bus, ensured all passengers safely disembarked, and created space for the delivery.

Suvarna delivered a healthy baby girl with Kanthamma’s assistance, and both mother and child were later taken to a government hospital via an 108 ambulance.

Speaking on the occasion, MD Sajjanar praised the RTC team’s quick thinking and compassion. “Such service during emergencies is the true spirit of RTC. We are proud of our staff and ASHA worker Kanthamma,” he said.

In another touching gesture, the TGSRTC also felicitated Gorl Sumasri, a young woman from Chimmanaguntapalli village in Wanaparthy district who secured the 179th rank in the recently announced Group-1 exam results. Her father, late Gorl Krishnaiah, served as a conductor at Wanaparthy depot and passed away during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Recognising her achievement, Sajjanar congratulated Sumasri and encouraged her to uphold excellence in public service.

“Your success is a proud moment not just for your family but also for the RTC fraternity,” he said.

Executive Director Munishekar, Chief Personnel Manager Usha Devi, and depot managers Krishnamurthy and Venu Gopal from Hyderabad-2 and Wanaparthy also participated in the event.
